A light ocean breeze passes your face as the morning sun crests the mountains to the east. From the west, you hear the crashing waves of the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean’s Banderas Bay. The fresh humid aroma of gorgeous tropical flowers and other vegetation beckons as you climb out of your golf cart and prepare to tee off at the first… your friends look on. It’s going to be a beautiful day of golf. In a very beautiful place.

Now this is golfing… year-round… on the incomparable Mexican Riviera. And at its heart, is the thriving and welcoming resort of Puerto Vallarta – the friendliest international city in the world, as determined by Condé Nast. And as a year-round resident and avid golfer myself, I couldn’t agree more!

Puerto Vallarta now boasts seven different golfing experiences, including world-class signature courses by Jack Nicklaus (there are two courses here designed by Nicklaus,) Tom Weiskopf, and Robert Von Haggi. Home to the EMC World Cup in 2002, Puerto Vallarta is fast gaining recognition worldwide as a favorite locale for discerning golfers looking for the best of golf, the best of resort-life, the best of authentic international culture, with the convenience of having it all in one enchanting location.

World-class golf first arrived in the Vallarta area with the opening of the Flamingos Golf Club, back in the late 70’s. This means that the course has had the time needed to fully mature, making the landscaping on this course stand out above the others. It also means that the natural surroundings allow for a wide variety of wildlife, including over 100 species of birds known to this tropical region.

Flamingos was designed by Percy Clifford and features generous fairways averaging 40 yards wide and that surround most greens – your chip shot is important here. The variety in the design accommodates all levels of players and the natural openness combined with the mature landscaping makes Flamingos both unique and enjoyable. Better still, this course features the lowest green fees in the entire region. The course is 20 minutes north of the city and free bus transportation is provided. For more details (and an excellent hole-by-hole description with photos), visit the Flamingos web site: http://www.flamingosgolf.com.mx/home_en.htm

Marina Vallarta Club de Golf opened in 1989 and was designed by Joe Finger. Like Flamingos, this course features well-developed landscaping and more than natural settings in which to enjoy a great long game of golf. Many consider Marina to be the most difficult course in the entire region, recommending a large inventory of extra balls for those who tend to slice or hook their way through a game. The course was reportedly purchased by Club Corp – a Dallas-based company that is involved in more than 200 such establishments or similar throughout the world. My personal favorite (along with many other locals,) Marina is conveniently located within the city and is easy walking distance from a number of hotels in the area. I usually golf at Marina once a week – I would love for you to join me! For a few more details visit the Marina web site: http://www.foremexico.com/marinagolf/

Four Seasons Golf Club Punta Mita arrived on the Vallarta golf scene in 1999 and created quite a buzz with its distinction as a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. It is a private course, open only to guests of the Four Seasons resort. According to PGA.com, this Four Seasons course is “…the main draw [for golfers], not only for the resort, but also for the entire Vallarta area.” The resort is about an hour’s drive to the north of Puerto Vallarta.

The design is indeed unique and fully takes advantage of the 200-acre oceanfront locale, with eight holes bordering the ocean. Four Seasons actually features what is reported to be the world’s only natural island as a standalone hole. The “Tail of the Whale” – the third hole – is a par-3, 194-yard experience said to be among the most beautiful in the world. In fact, the absence of a low tide could mean that you end up playing the alternate hole used when the island is inaccessible. For a few more details and fun “zoomable” photos, visit the Four Seasons web site: http://www.fourseasons.com/puntamita/vacations/golf.html

Opened in 2001,Vista Vallarta Golf Club actually hosts two different championship courses. The first to open was Course 1, a signature design by Jack Nicklaus, co-hosted the 2002 EMC World Cup. Vista Vallarta – Nicklaus is located on the higher elevations of the property and offers both world-class golf and stunning views of Banderas Bay, Puerto Vallarta and the Marina area as well. The design makes for challenging golf with a strong emphasis on strategy. Located about three miles inland from the Marina area, it is easy to find. For more details and hole-by-hole descriptions, visit the Vista Vallarta – Nicklaus web site: http://www.vistavallartagolf.com/vistavallarta_jack_nicklaus.html

Just a few months later, Vista Vallarta – Weiskopf opened and also co-hosted the 2002 EMC World Cup. Course 2 was built on the lower west-end of the Vista property and offers a stark contrast in experience over Course 1. Both courses are a wonderful alternative to the wide-open field-like alternatives out there. The terrain is diverse and features dense jungle, creeks and ravines. At a glance, some photos give this course a theme-park look, emphasizing its uniqueness and enjoy ability. This course is located in the same Vista Vallarta area. For more details and hole-by-hole descriptions, visit the Vista Vallarta – Weiskopf web site: http://www.vistavallartagolf.com/vistavallarta_tom_weiskopf.html

Located in the area known as Nuevo Vallarta, north of the Marina district, is the Mayan Palace Nuevo Vallarta Golf & Tennis Club. A newer course located by the ocean, golfers of all skill levels will enjoy the flat, expansive fairways. Designed by Jim Lipe, Mayan Palace features numerous lagoons and beautiful landscaping. Many holes are long and your woods will get a good workout. Their signature hole is #14 and features the Pacific Ocean to your left, the Ameca River at your back and the blue waters of the property’s navigation canals to your right. It is beautiful. The property is well known for their excellent service. For a few more details (not much more) visit the Mayan Palace web site: http://www.mayanpalace.com/nuevo/serv_golf.cfm?lang=en

The newest course in Puerto Vallarta opened in January 2004 and is also located in the Nuevo Vallarta district – about 30 minutes to the north. Paradise Village’s EL TIGRE was designed by Robert von Hagge and the Von Hagge Group in response to the challenge, “Create the most exciting championship golf course in Mexico.” Reports say that EL TIGRE is “light-heartedly referred to as the most challenging in Mexico,” yet the course is also considered quite forgiving to less experienced golfers mainly due to the wide fairways and five to six tees per hole. The terrain is flat with numerous – some say too numerous – strategically placed bunkers and small lakes; many look forward to enjoying this course more as it matures over time. For more details (lots more… with a virtual tour and hole-by-hole descriptions) visit the EL TIGRE web site: http://www.eltigregolf.com/

As if these seven exceptional courses weren’t enough to be causing quite a stir in the international golfing community, there are two additional world-class courses located to the south of Puerto Vallarta, both reachable within only three hours by automobile. Each one features a resort of its own if you are looking for a complete golf package. I am sure you will agree with me…there is golf to your liking here in this wonderful place!

It seems that thousands of others are catching on to all that Puerto Vallarta (or “PV” as it is more commonly known) with up to five million visitors each year. Our city is at the same latitude as the Hawaiian Islands, which means that you will enjoy similar tropical scenery and weather. Many golf year round and the real die-hards scarcely miss a day. And year after year countless Americans and Canadians settle in the Vallarta area to retire; most live half the year here (usually during the unpleasant cold winters) and the other half back home when the weather turns nice. It normally takes only one visit to PV for most people to get hooked… the plotting and scheming to return often starts on your first day here!

The uniqueness of Vallarta is that it is a Mexican city that has quite naturally evolved. Other resorts in Mexico are “planned” resorts, and have an obvious American influence and feel. PV features a downtown area steeped in the history of this once fishing village. All of the narrow streets in the “El Centro” district are made of hand-placed cobblestones and often feature traffic police to keep things moving. In the evenings, the city comes even more alive with thousands strolling along the oceanfront boardwalk known as the Malécon. The public square teems with dozens of vendors and carts featuring loads of wonderful art, trinkets, snacks and beverages. This is Mexico, with a warm and familiar friendliness that is not easily enjoyed in its other resorts.

Truly, PV is an excellent place to retire. As a world-class resort destination, the city offers the best of the best in fine dining, art galleries, museums, festivals and music. At the same time, retirees here have the option to take advantage of a lower cost of living that is synonymous with traditional Mexico. It truly is the best of both worlds, and one of the main reasons why Vallarta is rapidly becoming one of the favorite destinations for millions of people the world over.

Investment opportunities abound here offering historically excellent returns for those with the savvy to get involved. The most common investment is a retirement or vacation condo or villa often located either oceanfront or near one of our famous golf courses. Most people agree that the high-season demand for accommodations in Vallarta offers tremendous long-term insurance to real estate investors.

But most people are buying here as a different kind of investment: to simply enjoy more time here. Some would say that your emotional and spiritual well-being should be considered one of the best investments you ever make. And quite simply, there is something to be said about spending month after month in this relaxing tropical wonderland. And day after day of world-class golf, for those like me who are so inclined towards this mysterious sport. Allow me to venture that quite possibly, Puerto Vallarta is about as close to paradise on earth as most of us will ever see.

It’s Quite a History!

Many people know that golf originated in Scotland around 1421, but that’s only partly true. The actual origins of the sport go back even further to Holland and Belgium. But it was the Scots who added the hole and made it the game enjoyed by millions around the world today. It had a rough go back then. King James II outlawed the game because its popularity in 1457 was a threat to the important efforts to train the military – an important pursuit with the imposing threat of an English invasion. The ban continued for 45 years, up until the Treaty of Glasgow came into effect. It was Mary Queen of Scots who introduced golf to France while studying there. Her helpers on the course were French Military Cadets… from which our “caddies” and their moniker originated. The first Golf Club came about in 1744 in Leigh, Scotland, for the purpose of the first ever, annual golf competition. The winner received a silver golf club. Some believe the first Club in North America opened in Charleston, South Carolina in 1786. It wasn’t until 1900 that golf became a globally recognized game when it was made an Olympic sport.
